A Short Visit to Check on Progress

Reconnecting with friends and seeing the progress in the Abacos was a blessing. We missed traveling back last winter due to challenges with new regulations, but we were able to visit the island last week.

While we found that many homes have been completed, there is still much work to do to help families impacted by Hurricane Dorian. We spent several days talking to locals and asking how we can continue to help. We have come up with a two-fold plan:

  1. Send a team to rebuild Green Turtle Community Church. The church that helped set up emergency food distribution for several months, is still sitting in shambles. Their building was knocked off its foundation and is a total loss. We connected with a relief organization that will be helping the church to rebuild and are planning a trip in early 2022 to help rebuilt Green Turtle Community Church.
  2. Do our part to jump start the economy. Not only the hurricane but also Covid regulations have devastate the economy of the Abacos. Just as they were starting to rebuild, the islands went to total lockdown with no one in and no one out. These lockdowns were the reason we left in March 2020. Now that travel to the Bahamas has opened up, local businesses are in desperate need of people coming to the islands. We will be supporting small businesses by helping to bring in new clients to the islands. Consider renting a cottage with friends or family for a week, what a wonderful place to vacation! Contact us if you are interested and we can help set things up for your vacation.
