Feeding an Island
Several sail and powerboat cruisers have jumped in to help wherever they can in the Abacos. I have to mention Captain Brad and Loraine on M/V Adventure. After the storm, they loaded up their Nordhaven in Florida and immediately headed to Abaco. Their very first day in New Plymouth, they set up shop to make a meal for any who were in need.
With grocery stores destroyed the food supply was scarce. Also destroyed were private stoves and ovens, so even islanders who had food did not have a way to cook. Within a very short time, “The Adventure Café” was born!
Captain Brad has pallet loads of food shipped in each week. A local church opened their property for a makeshift kitchen to be set up and soon three meals a day were being served. Many on the island volunteered to help, but soon funds were raised to pay them for their work. The Café is not only feeding the island, but providing much needed jobs.
The food that our team brought over went immediately to the generator run freezers at the Café. We have had the privilege of helping to unload food from the supply ship, cook, clean and serve at the Adventure Café. Most importantly, we (along with several work crews) have been able to get so much more work done because we do not need to worry about taking time out of our day to make our team meals.
Caleb, Tiarra and Elijah Capt. Jeff Food Distribution Day
Crowds gather each evening at The Adventure Café in the center of town to eat together. There is a feeling of family between the locals, relief workers and cruisers. We all eat together and share of the day’s activities. Everyone has been through great hardship, but the hardship had really brought the island together. Our team looks forward to gathering with everyone after a hard day’s work to share, laugh and sometimes cry together.
I find it interesting, that with no TV to watch, no internet to surf, no electricity to run games or watch movies, the people all come out of their homes and gather. True community is developing in the wake of disaster. We are blessed to be a part, hardship and all.
