JEFF BOWEN

Captain Jeff started sailing in his early teen years and began teaching sailing during summers while in college. His sailing experience includes boats ranging from windsurfers to large cruising boats. Jeff lived aboard a 44′ Catamaran for 3 years with his wife and 5 children. As a family, they cruised between the Chesapeake Bay and the Bahamas. He holds his 100 Ton Master’s license, is an ordained minister, but he will tell you that his most important title is “dad”.

Captain Jeff founded Planet Hope as a non-profit sailing organization to mentor at-risk teens through the sport of sailing and it has been impacting the lives of young people for over 15 years. He has worked with young people through his church and other non-profit organizations in some capacity for over 25 years.

TERRY DONOHUE

Terry Donohue was born and raised in New  York, but he didn’t start sailing until he moved to Arlington, VA. Terry is a great sailor and can make any kid laugh hysterically. His humor and compassion helps to create one stellar camp atmosphere.

During  the year Terry is a high school English teacher, but he spends most of his time thinking about the water…and also pizza. He spends a lot of time thinking about pizza too.

CHARLEY SABATIER

Professor Sabatier’s primary career is teaching physics.  He understands stuff about boats that none of the rest of us can quite  figure out! During the summer months, when school is not in session, he trades in his cardigan for a life jacket and teaches sailing in the sun.

Charley has  served as the Waterfront Director for Planet Hope’s youth program but also is certified by the American Sailing Association to teach Keelboat Sailing. Charley is also an avid keelboat racer and can be found on the race course most Wednesday evenings calmly guiding his crew to victory.

JOEL BAYS

Joel Bays is a 4th generation Annapolitan. With sailing in his blood, he enjoys spreading his love for sailing to the next generation of sailors. At the age of 12, Joel and a neighborhood friend sailed successfully out into the Chesapeake Bay in his uncle’s sailboat. The only problem was…they didn’t know how to get back! Luckily, a friendly sailor guided them back to shore. After this experience Joel was determined to learn more. At 14, Joel joined the Annapolis Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Team. After 4 years of racing, he attended Salisbury University where he became the President of the Club Sailing Team.  2010 was Joel’s first year teaching for Planet Hope and he is excited about what the future has in store!

KELLY JO PREWITT

Before moving to Southern Maryland, Kelly Jo’s life mostly consisted of adventuring through the wild terrain and seas of Prince William Sound, Alaska aboard her family’s Nauticat.

Kelly Jo has always had a passion to work with young people both locally and globally. She is an ESL teacher for students in both elementary and secondary school.

This last summer she served as the Waterfront Director for Planet Hope’s youth program. She has been able to combine her passion for young people and sailing through Planet Hope’s youth sailing programs. She is a firm believer in mentoring youth and has seen fruit in mentoring through challenging recreational activities such as sailing.

PHINEHAS BOWEN

Phinehas was born in Virginia and grew up on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.  His love for the water developed as he sailed with his family and assisted his father at sailing camps.  He could sail a JY14 on his own at age six. At age seven his family sailed from Maryland to the Bahamas every winter until he was twelve. By age ten he was dive certified and was a Jr. Sailing Instructor by age 13. Now as a teenager, Phinehas teaches sailing each summer with Planet Hope. When he isn’t teaching, Phinehas enjoys sailing with his family and racing keelboats.   Since Phin’s father is the founder of Planet Hope he enjoys unlimited access to sailing!

TYE LIBBY

Born in Columbia, SC, Tye grew up learning to sail on Lake Murray in a friend’s Sunfish. Yet, he truly became hooked after a two-week family sailing trip through the Virgin Islands. After attending the University of Georgia (B.A. 2006) and the University of Denver (M.A. 2008), Tye moved to Washington, D.C. in order to pursue a job in the International Affairs field. While living in D.C., Tye was introduced to both the wonderful Planet Hope staff and the amazing Chesapeake Bay. Thus, it’s no surprise that he jumped at the opportunity to help kids learn how to sail, develop their life skills, and have fun. The experience was so memorable and rewarding that he can’t wait for Planet Hope Sailing Camp 2011!
